콜마르는 역사는 담배상자에서부터 시작한다. 1923년 마리오 콜롬보가 담배 상자 제작 공정을 시작할 때 그의 새로운 의류라인을 위해서 여러 종류의 담배 상자가 샘플로 제작되었는데 그 중에서 설립자의 이니셜을 딴 '콜마르'라는 이름이 선택되게 되었다. 첫 생산라인은 작업복이었는데 그 후 스키어들을 위한 의류를 생산하면서 오늘날까지 '데일리웨어'에서 중요한 브랜드로 자리매김 하고 있다.
