Meet The Designer: Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons

Junya Watanabe is a Japanese fashion designer whose label, Junya Watanabe Comme des Garcons, is well-known for its exploratory and cutting-edge approach to simple fashion pieces. There’s a particular distinctive look with Watanabe’s creations due to his deep fascination with synthetic and technologically advanced textiles and fabrics, and tradition materials as well. With the boldness and freshness he brings to the fashion world, he often considered the “techno couture” designer.     Beginnings  Junya Watanabe started out as an apprentice of Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo before launching his own established label Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons under the Japanese fashion house. His mentor, Kawakubo, is also famous for having distinctive and highly-innovative designs, of where Watanabe got inspiration from. In 1993, Junya Watanabe Comme des Garcons debuted its first women’s wear in a fashion show in Paris. Approach In an interview with New York Times, Junya Wanatabe shared what influenced him to venture in fashion “There’s nothing in particular that made me want to start fashion and create clothes. But if I were to mention something, it would be the fact that my mother used to have a little made-to-order shop. That may have been an influence.”  Junya Watanabe Fall/Winter 2017-18 Collection     Present Today, Junya Watanabe Comme des Garcons continues to be a remarkable global brand in the fashion industry, setting the tone on what it truly means to be different, and stay different. Raf Simons Sweaters For Men | Street Style Staples

“I wanted to approach it from the combination of a mind-set of someone who comes to New York in the beginning, a kid let’s say.” Raf Simons tells the press backstage at the New York Fashion Week where he debuted his Fall 2017 Menswear collection in New York for the first time, departing its usual spot at Paris Fashion Week. Quite evidently, Simons’ perspective of that freshness and innocence is instantly recognizable across his Fall 2017 Collection, particularly on one of the most favorite street styles this season– Raf Simons sweaters for men.      The I heart N.Y. sweater is a typographical design of Milton Glaser, one of the most celebrated graphic designers. Gosha Rubchinskiy Sports Trend Collection

Gosha Rubchinskiy Sports Trend Collection

There isn’t a better generation than today with the Sportswear trend profusion. And there is no better name that somehow became synonymous with the sportswear phenomenon than Gosha Rubchinskiy. The Russian-born designer has brought the sportswear fashion’s A-game into full play. Gosha Ruchinskiy transformed his then-understated graphic T-shirt business into one of the world’s premiere street fashion brands today together with Adrian Joffe, Comme des Garçons president and Dover Street Market founder. Although he had no formal fashion training and financial difficulties, he launched his brand Gosha Rubchinskiy in 2008, but the business had fallen short. In 2009, he was chosen by former Russian Vogue editor Anna Dyulgerova to show as part of Cycles and Seasons where Gosha Rubchinskiy attracted many international buyers and media, but failed to process requests due to insufficient inventory. It wasn’t until he met Adrian Joffe that the label surged to fashion prominence. At present, Rubchinskiy manages the creative side of the business while Comme des Garçons owns the business entity and Gosha Rubchinskiy trademark.        Gosha Rubchinskiy’s creations are inspired by his persona as a man of many talents– artist, filmmaker, photographer and designer, and by his native, Russia. It made a Gosha Rubchinskiy piece distinctive as his works strongly reflect the Russian youth culture and pursues to empower the image of these youth through his powerful, transgressive designs. The Gosha Rubchinskiy collection this season, Fall/Winter 17-18, further escalates the sportswear trend with his current collaboration with Adidas to celebrate 2018 Football World Cup in Russia.
