History of Jacquemus

Jacquemus is the namesake label of French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus. Born in a small town near Marseille, in the south of France, the now world-famous designer created his first garment at age eight—a skirt made from a linen curtain that he gifted his mother.

Determined to pursue his love for fashion, after high school Jacquemus moved to Paris to attend ESMOD (École supérieure des arts et techniques de la mode). The experience, however, turned out to be nothing like he had imagined.

 

“I thought I’d arrive in Paris and people would be colorful, poetic, inspired, jumping and dancing in the streets, happy to be in Paris”, he told Modesens.

 

But instead, “no one was passionate”. 

A month after he moved to Paris, Jacquemus’s mother died in a car accident. This tragic occurrence motivated him to drop out of university, and, at just 19 years old, launch his own fashion label, named after his mother’s maiden name—Jacquemus.

Fun fact: the designer’s signature minimalist aesthetic originates from necessity more than anything else. As he lacked money, Jacquemus couldn’t afford expensive details, such as buttons or pockets!

In 2012, Jacquemus was the youngest designer ever to show his collection at the Paris Fashion Week. Initially a womenswear and accessories label, today Jacquemus also offers menswear, on top of his miniscule bags and his dramatically oversized hats (e.g. the Le Grand Chapeau Bomba hat).

Jacquemus has even opened his own restaurant, Café Citron, at the Galeries Lafayette Champs-Élysées, bringing a taste of his beloved south of France to Paris.
