Matching sets can be difficult and amazing all at the same time.  When paired correctly they can certainly be a fun and flirty way to show off a bit of skin and pop of color, á la Taylor Swift. When worn incorrectly you can end up looking like a grown up ad for “Garanimals”.

How To Wear Matching Sets

How, when, and where you wear a matching set is almost as important as the garments themselves.  For example, a tight black matching set may look great if you’re going to the clubs, but not such a great idea for a funeral.  Unless, of course, you really hate that person. Then it’s probably a pretty fun little number and you should pair it with some curvy red heels.

This season’s two-piece combos show a lot of color and pop.  They’re fun and flirty and invoke a sense of fashion whimsy.

Some of the recent runway patterns use florals with bold colors that bring the fun like this Dolce and Gabbana set.  The striking red carnation against the black, the cigarette pants and flirty top—this is a fun look.  Paired with the matching shoes and bold bag and you are good for a day out with the girls or a romantic walk along the Arno.

Smart, Smarter, Smartest

The tropics meet the boardroom in this MSGM matching set.  Paired with the Prada bag and Cheville flats you are ready for your luxury holiday or business invitational to the Seychelles or Bali—or at least you can look like you just got back.  Cocktails (tiny umbrellas included) anyone?

Monochromatic is Major

Depending upon the the prints–and your personal panache–monochromatic print sets like this Alexander McQueen outfit will put you on everyone’s guest list.   Only Alexander McQueen can take skulls and florals and not make it look like a tattoo parlor flash screen.  And the shoes…we’re dying!

Ready to try your hand at wearing a matching set? Here’s a tip:

Monochromatic colors can give the appearance of a matching set without actually being one.  Pairing cool tones that match together can produce the same effect. Now get out there and strike a pose!
