A fresh take on a classic emerges this season with the arrival of the Givenchy Antigona Soft handbag
Ten years ago, Riccardo Tisci introduced the now-iconic and still highly desirable Givenchy Antigona handbag, which had a unique shape and structure to other bags of the era. Its modern interpretation of a classic “doctor’s bag” along with an oversized maxi zipper made it well-suited for celebrities and fashion-lovers alike.
Givenchy Antigona Soft
For Fall 2020, the Parisian label has introduced a softer, less structured version of the Antigona called the Givenchy Antigona Soft (below). Many of the original design features remain, but the new version is floppy, with a more supple handle. There are new seasonless neutral colors too, like beige, sky blue, and dove grey in addition to black.
While the original (pictured above), has a stiffer structure with six defined facets and a width that allows it to stand up on its own, the new Givenchy Antigona Soft version is less clearly defined, with corners that can stand up or be fastened down, flexible handles, and a slightly narrower width so that the bottom doesn’t droop with the softer leather base.
Both versions, in our humble opinion, are really quite elegant and timeless, though the original Givenchy Antigona feels business-like and sturdy for everyday use whereas the new Givenchy Antigona Soft appears more casual and slightly more delicate. Like the original, it comes in a few different sizes and can be held in the hand, in the crook of the elbow, or as a crossbody.

Pictured on the far left above, the special cape dress was designed by outgoing Givenchy Creative Director Claire Waight Keller as one of two iconic dresses of the French fashion house: the classic black dress of Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany’s created by Hubert de Givenchy and the iconic dress worn by Meghan Markle with a removable cape designed by Ms. Waight Keller. We have it in red and black.
The new Givenchy Antigona Soft bag works well with the label’s other designs, complementing their feminine yet bold mood. FYI: Givenchy has named 1017 Alyx 9SM‘s Matthew M. Williams as the new head designer.
