How the brand was born—history, name, expeditions

The name Moncler is an abbreviation of Monestier-de-Clermont, an alpine village near Grenoble, France. It’s here that, in 1952, French entrepreneurs René Ramillon and Andrè Vincent founded the brand.

Initially, they produced functional equipment for mountain adventures: sleeping bags, tents, and a single model of a hooded cape. Foreseeing the brand’s potential, French mountaineer Lionel Terray endorsed it, and the label came out with a line named “Moncler pour Lionel Terray,” which included high-resistance tents, gloves, shoes, and the brand’s signature down jacket.

In 1954, Moncler equipped the Italian expedition which conquered the K2, the world’s second highest summit, achieving worldwide recognition. Soon after that, the jackets were worn on expeditions to Mount Makalù, Alaska, and other far-flung parts of the world.

By the early 1990s, interest in the brand was fading. The offering had become stale after decades of sameness. Enter Italian entrepreneur Remo Ruffini: Ruffini bought the brand in 2003 and revived it, making the puffy down jacket a winter staple for urban cities and ski resorts alike.

“The goal,” he told Diana Derval, “was to bring the brand into the future starting from its origins. Our aim was to roll out a ‘global down jacket’ strategy all over the world. […] Moncler is the jacket for all occasions.”

Where is Moncler made?

Founded in France and now based in Milan, Moncler is 100% made in Europe. The jackets are primarily manufactured in Romania, as well as Bulgaria, Moldova, Armenia, and Hungary.

To ensure the health and safety of its employees at the production site in Romania, the brand performs on-site inspections, as well as free annual blood and eye tests.

Aside from the Gamme collection, which was discontinued, Moncler does not produce in Italy. So, if the country on the tag of your jacket is Italy or France, beware: it’s likely to be a fake!

Why is Moncler so expensive?

Moncler only uses the finest, most innovative, and high-performance materials for its products, and ensures that all suppliers comply with the highest quality standards.

Down: In the fashion world, puffy down fill is synonymous with Moncler. With decades of experience, the brand sources the best white goose down for its garments, which then undergoes a thorough inspection procedure.

To ensure high fill power, the jackets contain 90% down cluster and only 10% feathers. This makes the jackets light, comfortable, and perfectly insulating.

Nylon: Moncler uses several kinds of high-performance nylon. Among them, a high-density, light-weight, down-proof Japanese nylon, which only weighs 33 grams per square meter and ensures water resistance.

In 2020, the brand launched the Born to Protect sustainability project, shifting toward renewable energies, reducing the use of plastic, contributing to the COVID-19 emergency management efforts in Italy, and releasing a line of jackets and accessories made entirely of eco-friendly materials.
